Dhs370 million expansion to University City approved.
Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, UAE Minister of Finance and Industry & Chairman of Dubai Municipality, has approved a Dhs370 million expansion for Zayed University at University City in Al Rowaiyya.
The approval was announced by Mattar Al Tayer, assistant director general of Dubai Municipality for Roads & General Projects Affairs, who noted that the final design of the project was chosen after received designs from 11 international consultants that specialise in the design of educational establishments and colleges.
“Works will begin in August 2004 and the university is set to open in September 2006, the start of a new academic year. The new buildings will accommodate the existing number of students as well as the projected growth in the number of students in future,” Al Tayer said.
The works will be carried out in two phases with the first phase accommodating some 5000 students till the year 2013 and the second phase accommodating 2000 students till the year 2017. Provisions for further expansions to admit higher numbers of students have also been included in the design.
“The first phase constructions will cater for all the needs for establishments for female students until the year 2010. The future expansions of the university will not in any way affect education process in the campus,” he noted.
Design of the three-story building is unique in the sense that the students can move around inside the campus without being subject to the hot and humid weather conditions. The design also incorporates several features of the local architecture including a tent over the open courtyard where students can gather and the covered and landscaped corridors.
Zayed University comprises six colleges that enable students to obtain a bachelor’s degree in different disciplines. The faculties are: Arts & Humanities, Management Sciences, Communication & Media Sciences, Education, Home Science, and Information Systems. The University City is a brainchild of General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Minister of Defence and will include the construction of as many as 20 universities on the entire 1100 hectare University City premises.
