MTC Vodafone users in Bahrain watch TV on mobile devices

Customers of the MTC-Vodafone service in Bahrain can now access live television content on their mobile phones thanks to the launch of a Live TV to mobile service

Customers of the MTC-Vodafone service in Bahrain can now access live television content on their mobile phones thanks to the launch of a Live TV to mobile service – the first in the region. The service, introduced by MTC-Vodafone in Bahrain, enables customers to download and view a range of content including entertainment programmes and local news from Bahrain Television, Live regional Arabic news from Al Arabiya and music video clips from Rotana TV.

MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) has introduced Live TV as part of its recently re-launched World of WoW service, claimed to be one of the region’s most innovative entertainment services. The option, however, is current available only on select handsets such as the Sony Ericsson P800/P900, Nokia 6600, Nokia 7650, Nokia 3650 and Siemens SX1. MTC-Vodafone Bahrain is working towards enabling the Nokia 7610 and other Pocket PC devices to also support the service.

Customers can activate the service by downloading a free application called the WoW Media Centre from the MTC-Vodafone (Bahrain) web site onto their handsets or get it from the company’s experience stores in the Kingdom.
“At MTC, we are taking the first steps to building an Entertainment and Media company, where we need to provide the tools for instantaneous information, entertainment, excitement to our customers,” commented Dr. Eddine Salman, senior advisor for MTC group, Mobile Data Services. “We are aware of the emerging future of the telecom and we want to take advantage of it. Mobile Data Service revenue is expected to reach 27% of total mobile voice customer revenue by 2007,” he added.

This service has been made possible thanks to a state-of-the-art live TV and media distribution system at the MTC-Vodafone office in Bahrain. The system provides live television streaming at 10 frames per second. ”This high quality at a moderate bandwidth has so far not been seen anywhere else in the world. The advanced GPRS, EDGE and 3G networks of MTC-Vodafone have made Bahrain an excellent country of choice for MIS to introduce our advanced mobile services,” comments David McKenna, chief executive officer at Mobile Integrated Solutions, which deployed the system at the facility.

Bahrain Radio and TV Corporation (BRTC), which has been upgrading its broadcast technology of late, stated that it was looking forward to more such partnership opportunities to fulfill its business plans. “We hope that this technology will bring both the viewer and mobile user closer to their needs in accessing news, music and sports programmes," commented Maria Khoury, head of Marketing & Corporate Services, BRTC.
