The long planned Jebel Ali Airport is set to be operational by the end of 2006, according to press reports. The Dubai government has brought forward its construction plans for the airport, which will predominately cater for cargo traffic, as well as low-cost carriers. An unnamed source told Gulf News that a statement about the Dhs 1 billion project will be released today.

The Jebel Ali Airport was expected to come online between 2015 and 2020 once the current site reaches saturation. However, the growth in aviation in the region, especially Dubai, as well as the growing success of low-cost carriers in the region has seemingly forced the DCA’s hand. The DCA had previously ruled out allowing LCCs to operate at Dubai International, despite requests from at least three operators, but it has seemingly now found an alternative way into the market. The airport will also relieve some of the pressure off Sheikh Zayed Road by allowing cargo to be flown out of Jebel Ali directly without being transported to Dubai Cargo Village. The airport, which will be built near the Dubai Investment Park, will also serve the ‘New Dubai’ area around Sheik Zayed Road, including the new Emaar, Nakheel and Dubailand projects.
