PAV Data Systems has released a PAVExpress, which is its latest low-cost, point-and-play Free Space Optics (FSO) system.

The optical wireless communications system is designed for short-range applications and provides full duplex, Fast Ethernet 100Mbps bandwidth up to 200 metres. Its small size, lightweight, and express installation capability is designed to make it especially attractive for LAN connectivity in business parks, city centre offices and campus locations. Its rapid installation also makes it ideal when the solution has to be re-deployed in different locations, claims the company.

Eye-safe Class 1M laser light is used as the transmission medium for PAV’s point-to-point line-of-sight FSO links. This is designed to provide high reliability and availability for enterprise networks and telcos alike.

The system supports the transmission of voice, video and data and PAV’s FSO systems support the increasing capacity demands of both mobile phones and the internet and, with over 7000 PAV FSO links installed worldwide, distances up to 4km can be covered.

The theory of FSO is essentially the same as that for fibre optic transmission. The difference is that the energy beam is collimated and sent through clear air or space from the source to the destination, rather than guided through an optical fibre.
