Basra Governor in ITC talks

The Governor of Basra, Wael Abdelateef Hussein, has said one of the purposes of a recent trip the UAE was to forge closer links with IT and telecommunications companies.

The Governor of Basra, Wael Abdelateef Hussein, has said one of the purposes of a recent trip the UAE was to forge closer links with IT and telecommunications companies.

Hussein led a 20-strong delegation from the war torn city of Basra to Dubai recently to encourage UAE-based firms to invest in Iraq’s crumbling infrastructure.

“I am heavily involved in the rebuilding of the telecommunications infrastructure and realise how important it will be,” Hussein told journalists at Dubai’s Burj Al-Arab hotel. “We feel we have a lot to gain from the experience of the UAE in building a modern state,” he added.

But the Governor, who spent time in jail at the hands of former dictator Saddam Hussein, would not be drawn into discussing the specifics of which information technology and communication (ITC) companies he was in contact with during his tour. “So far we are not offering any tenders out, we are accepting applications for investment in all sectors of Iraq,” he added.

There is evidence that links between Iraq and the UAE’s ITC community are strengthening. Earlier this year, colonel Khalid Lootah, assistant director in charge of IT and total quality for the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD) visited authorities in southern Iraq with a view to assisting them in implementing IT systems at Iraqi ports.

“We feel there is a lot of work still left to be done in the full reconstruction programme and we will offer expertise in areas of IT and HR to all the ports of Basra,” the DNRD’s Colonel bin Belailah told the Iraqi delegation.
