Leadership is key for successful IT

While many may think that the latest software, largest server or fastest network is the key to successful IT, it is not. Meta Group has confirmed what many in the industry have known for some time — that it is a great IT manager or CIO that makes the difference.
According to the analyst house, leaders are the most important asset within any IT department striving to optimise their impact on the business. Motivated by a core set of values centered on trust, teamwork, and truth, these leaders drive the ITO to excel, as well as its partners and suppliers.
However, the CIO’s lot is not necessarily a simple one. To provide value, they must offer services that deliver the expected results, along with competency, resource agility, cost-effectiveness, risk mitigation, and intimacy. CIO’s also need to develop leadership skills and to foster value within the organisation.
“Beyond constant technological change, today’s CIOs must also deal with underlying economic factors — by current business conditions, global uncertainty, a hardware glut, and vendor consolidation — that have altered the technology landscape,” says Louis Boyle, senior vice president with Meta Group’s executive directions.
“IT executives who wish to compete in the long run will need to understand these factors and transform them into business differentiators,” he adds.
