MSI has released the Mega Stick 256, a multi-function portable audio device. It is the latest addition to MSI’s varied Mega series of products, which are targeted at home entertainment users.

The Mega Stick 256 is a flash disk that doubles up as an MP3 player and also features integrated radio and a voice recorder. MSI claims that this digital recording function is perfect for capturing ideas, dictating memos and saving reminders.

In its MP3 guise, the device provides customised sound with five EQ Modes (Normal, Rock, Jazz, Classic, Pop) and plays WMA files as well as MP3 songs. The disk’s primary function, however, is as a 256MB portable USB mass storage device and you can use it to share your music, photos and documents between PCs.

It is versatile enough to operate also as an FM radio player and can also be used to record radio programmes on to the flash disk’s memory.

You can keep track of programmes on the onboard LED screen. Despite its small size, the device shows information such as EQ setting, battery status and track duration. The disk works without needing to install a driver, as long as you are working with Windows XP.

In addition, it provides up to 14 hours of battery life on a single AAA battery and firmware upgrades can be downloaded from the internet to the flash disk by using the provided USB cable.

MSI also showed off the PN54GBT wireless component at CES. It supports both 802.11g and Bluetooth and fits into a PC like a standard 5.25” optical storage drive. It features an LED panel that displays the signal strength of the wireless device in use.

The PN54GBT works with MSI’s proprietary software application to soft-simulate the function of wireless base station. MSI claims that with user-friendly installation and software interface, anybody can easily install this device and enjoy the convenience of wireless internet access.
