Al Jazeera extends reach of mobile service

Al Jazeera has widened the reach of its breaking news service for mobile users after striking a deal with French software provider, Swapcom.

Al Jazeera has widened the reach of its breaking news service for mobile users after striking a deal with French software provider, Swapcom.

After being selected by Al Jazeera’s technology partner, Al Majaz, Swapcom will integrate the service into its multimedia mobile information portal (MMIP), an all-in-one alerting and information delivery platform, which is plugged directly into mobile networks.

Through the MMIP and Swapcom’s multimedia mobile gateway (MMG), Al Majaz will be able to format and distribute content for distribution to devices, while users will be billed directly on their phone bills in partner networks, or on their credit card elsewhere.

The Al Jazeera Mobile service enables mobile users around the world to receive breaking news updates directly on their phone via SMS, in both English and Arabic. Users can define personal filters on the content, to stipulate how and where they want to receive it and at different hours of the day.

Al Majaz says it will also launch the service soon via MMS, WAP, and vocal messages. Since its commercial launch in October 2003, the provider says its user base has increased monthly by an average of 20%.

“Swapcom’s solution enables us to distribute AlJazeera premium contents using SMS, MMS, WAP and soon vocal messages,” says Mohammed Al Obaidly, CEO of Al Majaz.

“With the MMIP, we can directly connect to mobile networks, define specific billing models for each operator, and format multimedia content as and when we need to. This is key for distributing the latest up-to-the-minute news content,” he adds.
