HP is looking to increase the uptake of Gigabit Ethernet in the enterprise with its latest ProCurve switches. The products based around the vendor's ProCurve Adaptive Edge Enterprise architecture are designed to bring affordable, intelligent control to the network edge.

HP's new 2800 family includes the Switch 2824 with 20 10/100/1000 ports and four dual-personality ports for 10/100/1000 or mini-GBIC connectivity and the Switch 2848, which offers 44 10/100/1000 ports also with four dual personality ports.

Both switches also provide auto-negotiation features that ensure they provide the best possible speed for each machine accessing them. Furthermore, the switches offer virtual local area network (VLAN) to VLAN connectivity across a routed network.

HP has also enhanced its 4100gl and 5300xl series switches with the release of Gigabit Ethernet modules for them.

"HP ProCurve's ongoing commitment to drive intelligence and control to the network edge has taken a big step forward," says Ivan R. Kraemer, sales and marketing director for the Middle East, Africa & Mediterranean, HP ProCurve Networking Business.

"For the first time, Gigabit Ethernet performance at the network edge is an affordable option for enterprises of any size, giving them an unprecedented opportunity to take advantage of the existing Gigabit connection capabilities of today's desktop and notebook PCs," he claims.
