Babel launches Arabic text to speech software

A modern Arabic language text-to-speech (TTS) engine, primarily aimed at the telecoms market, has been released by Babel Technologies. The Saudi Arabian firm has announced the addition of Salma, based on its BrightSpeech technology, to its existing TTS range.
The Arab language addition to the BrightSpeech TTS engine is deigned to improve naturalness, flexibility and fast response time for the telecoms, assistive technologies and high-end multimedia solutions. This new language development of the highly regarded BrightSpeech quality speech synthesis includes a high-quality diacritizer. This module automatically adds vowels to the text that is used by the engine.
BrightSpeech offers unlimited application opportunities for software developers wishing to use synthetic speech as an information carrier of exceptional quality for their products or services. Based on unit selection technology, this human-sounding TTS engine can be easily integrated into telecoms servers and multimedia applications, making it the ideal speech solution for voice portals, interactive voice response systems, unified messaging (including e-mail reading), educational software and interactive kiosks.

The software has now been released in Arabic (Modern), Dutch, French, German, Spanish, Swedish and US English, and an on-going development effort ensures that it will progressively cover Babel’s full range of 18 languages. In the course of 2004, BrightSpeech will also be adapted to mobile platforms to provide the same naturalness and voice quality for automotive and mobile device applications.
