The much-awaited Big 5 Show got off to a soft, but nevertheless, sure start with two VIPs inaugurating what has been billed as the construction industry largest event in the region.

The show, which runs from November 29 until December 3, was inaugurated by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, president of Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and chairman of Emirates airline. An entourage of top Dubai officials accompanied him.

The other VIP at the show was HH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, who was at the exhibition to show his support for British participants.

“This is an official visit as British Special Trade Representative to meet with British exhibitors and to demonstrate his support for them,” said Simon Collis, British consul general in Dubai. Prince Andrew did not make a statement to the press.

“Big 5 is one of the major exhibitions where 65 British companies are participating,” said Collis adding that the UAE is a major market for UK. About 12% of UK’s exports are in the construction sector.

While in the UAE, Prince Andrew will meet with Emarati and resident British businessmen, government officials and will then, leave for Abu Dhabi. He is not visiting any other country in the Gulf on this tour.

Though the show is called the Big 5, it actually comprises seven major exhibitions sprawling across the entire Dubai World Trade Centre’s exhibition complex. It occupies all eight halls and spills out onto the concourse. It is bigger by 20% in floor space than last year’s show, which was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry.
