Anixter plans growth in CCTV market

Anixter is looking to bring standardisation and higher quality images to the world of CCTV through the use of its CCTP (closed circuit twisted pair) solution. The system, which will connect analogue and digital devices running video, power and control signals, is also designed to offer users investment protection and easier upgrade paths.
“We looked at the CCTV market and there are no standards, and there’s ad hoc cabling,” says Andrew Flint, technical pre-sales manager, Anixter.
“So we’re looking to apply the expertise we have in the physical layer to the CCTV arena and bring a level of standardisation and standard operating practises. This in turn will enhance customers’ expectations, while they now expect their networks to run all the time, they will put up with fuzzy close circuit TV pictures,” he continues.
Anixter, however, says the solution, which has been developed with Bosch Security Systems and Belden among others, can overcome the ‘fuzzy’ images that seem to defeat the whole point of installing CCTV and provide a solution that delivers better quality visuals, reduces the amount of cabling and configuration required and easily integrates into the existing network infrastructure.
“The quality of the video is very much down to the installation and where you have no standards in place there’s no guarantee of quality. So by adopting a standardised approach with CCTP, which is a complete solution including cabling, cameras and video recorders… it allows users to take advantage of the resolution of the cameras. We know we can guarantee the quality of the picture,” says Flint.
Furthermore, users no longer need three cables – power, video and control – for their CCTV system, instead the twisted pair cable incorporates all of these functionalities in one and in doing so eases future management and migration processes.
“For example, if someone is running traditional analogue cameras and then wants to upgrade to digital IP cameras it is difficult. They will have to completely recable,” says Flint.
“But by putting in CCTP and following a standards based approach they can use the analogue cameras today and when the time comes to upgrade to digital, the technology is already in place. It is straightforward, just unplug the [old] kit and plug it [the new cameras] back into the existing cables,” he continues.
Although CCTV implementations may be regarded as a physical security issue, Anixter is pitching CCTP at the network or IT security professionals that have an understanding of transmitting video across networks, and the distributor believes that they have a large target market to aim at.
“There’s a lot of close circuit TV — in malls, car parks and hotels,” comments Flint.
“And we are seeing lot of companies starting to appoint security officers and they tend to be from an IT background. So the CCTP solution is really aimed at those who are already data centric because they will understand the arguments that we are making about the cabling and the handling of video signals,” he adds.
