Cisco retains market leadership in the campus LAN

According Meta Group, Cisco Systems has performed ahead of the market during the tough economic environment.

Enterprise data networking vendors are failing to challenge Cisco Systems dominant position in the campus local area network (LAN) market.

According to a Meta Group report, the networking giant has performed ahead of the market during the tough economic environment.

“Cisco still dominates the campus-LAN equipment market,” says Chris Kozup, program director with META Group's Infrastructure Strategies advisory service.

“When evaluating campus-LAN equipment vendors, users should pay close attention to vendor success in sales execution. Users should also push vendors for road maps regarding the integration of additional services into the network, [such as] wireless [and] security. [Also], a historical view of market share and a clear understanding of a vendor's financials will best equip users to select a partner with solid long-term viability,” he adds.

Enterprise clients are continuing to consolidate their infrastructure spending among fewer strategic providers. Consequently, a vendor’s market presence and its ability to maintain and grow that presence are critical in demonstrating long-term viability and gaining credibility.

End user organisations must perform comprehensive evaluations of partner capabilities to ensure an appropriate match between partner strengths and business imperatives.

The other key performers in the market, including the likes of Nortel, Enterasys, Extreme and Foundry, are all aggressively chasing the market with aggressive pricing strategy.
