Telecom Egypt launches multi-service solution

Telecom Egypt, the country’s fixed line monopoly, has installed a next generation core network layer in Alexandria to support national and international voice traffic flowing in and out of the city.

Telecom Egypt, the country’s fixed line monopoly, has installed a next generation core network layer in Alexandria to support national and international voice traffic flowing in and out of the city.

Under the deal, six telephony servers and seven multi-service gateways (soft-switches) from Swedish supplier Ericsson will be installed to carry traffic to and from the 1.5 million subscribers in Greater Alexandria.

Further implementations are also planned to support Egypt’s remaining international traffic and Cairo’s national traffic.

The move forms part of an earlier framework agreement signed by the Swedish equipment vendor and Telecom Egypt in 2001, covering the development of the operator’s core and access networks towards next generation network technologies.

The move represents the first commercial launch of an ATM packet-based multi-service Engine solution in a traditional telephony mega-network in Africa, according to Johan Lallerstedt, president of market unit Northern Africa, Ericsson.

“We are very pleased to announce this important achievement that is the result of our long relationship with Telecom Egypt, supported by great dedication and cooperation between our teams. This ATM packet-based MultiService ENGINE solution is yet another example of Ericsson's technology leadership and commitment to helping our customers offer the most advanced wire line services to their customers,” Lallerstedt adds.
