IT managers in Europe are taking a cautious approach to storage investment. According to research from IDC, the rapid pace of technical innovation in the storage arena has forced many IT executives to put storage investment on the backburner.

“There is no shortage of new and potentially disruptive solutions in the world of storage. The consequence is that IT users see the vendors releasing their innovations at an almost breathtaking pace. But the reality is, however, that today's enterprises are approaching storage spending with caution,” says Claus Egge, IDC’s European storage research service director.

“Security and protection are right now high on the list where new investments are concerned, but the main issue is still controlling cost,” he adds.

Egge was speaking at an IDC conference in Europe to help delegates understand how cost and storage innovation can go hand in hand to deliver value and improve operations.

Part of that process is experimenting with emerging technology to see what it can do for the organisation. However, IT departments shouldn’t lose focus of ‘where real value’ is to be found.
