FIC considering manufacturing in the Middle East

New wireless infrastructure products shipping to Middle East, vendor also plans to invest in local manufacturing this year

FIC is branching out its activities in the Middle East, with the launch of a number of new product ranges and plans to invest in manufacturing facilities in the region.

The vendor is currently in discussions with several officials in unnamed countries in the region, and hopes to be able to announce manufacturing operations in the Middle East by the third quarter, according to Hassan Ashi managing director of Middle East operations, FIC.

“We don’t have an interest in opening offices in any [country], but we are trying to support this region by moving some of the know-how of FIC from a manufacturing point of view,” he said.

“We have had some discussions with some official people, but we will be announcing that in Q3. I can see the market is moving to local manufacturing—not assembly, but local manufacturing,” he said.

The vendor displayed a number of new products at this year’s Cebit show in Hannover, which are now shipping in the region. Among the product lines were tablet PCs, Pocket PCs, the small form factor Ice Cube PC and Centrino notebooks. FIC was recently awarded by Intel at the Intel Solution Summit for the fastest adoption of Centrino in the Middle East.
FIC is also shipping its new wireless gateway product to the Middle East, marking a move into infrastructure products for the vendor in the region.

“Everybody is talking about wireless now, it is a very promising area, so FIC is now expanding into servers, routers and workstations, not just the notebooks,” Ashi said.
