The phenomenal growth of the smart phone sector in the Middle East is showing no signs of slowing down with the launch of a new model, the i-Mate from British manufacturer Carrier Devices.

Unveiled at the recent Gitex exhibition in Saudi Arabia, the company claims i-Mate has a unique blend of voice and data that maximises your ability to display information, be organised and stay in touch. It also boasts the full Koran on board with handy reminders before each prayer time.

“It’s simple, we’ve taken all the functionality of the PDA and put it on a phone” said Carrier Devices senior vice president, Jim Morrison who was part of the design team responsible for the i-Mate model.

Morrison predicts a big future for smart phones in the region and Carrier Devices is moving its headquarters from the United Kingdom to Dubai Internet City. “The Arab consumer is technically savvy, they may have money to spend but they don’t waste it,” said Morrison, who indicated that the ‘Arab phone’ would be in the shops by spring 2004. Carrier devices also launched an integrated pocket pc and phone, The Q-TEK, into the Middle East one year ago.
