The Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai was buzzing on January 27 as the Citrix Forum brought together some of the keenest commentators on the server industry. Among the speakers where Mr Abdullatif Al Mulla from Microsoft, who emphasised how important Citrix is as a partner for Microsoft, particularly in the light of the launch of Windows Server 2003.
Another key speaker Stefan Sjostrom, Citrix vice-president for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Mr Sjostrom said: “Our mission is to deliver information over any network and any device so the businessman of the near future can have access to the same information in the office, home and car, without any deterioration in how the quality of that information.”
In building towards this ambitious goal Citrix has set itself four key challenges it believes must be tackled effectively. Mr Sjostrom emphasised the importance of application deployment from servers over a network rather than having software installed on every PC. Afcomp, the software division of Al Futtaim, also stressed the importance of this, saying that it means that less emphasis is placed on every worker having a cutting edge PC. As the main workload is handled by the server, a reasonably modest PC can be used by workers. Mr Sjostrom also stressed the importance of being able to provide remote connectivity to the office, business continuity and lastly workforce mobility. He also talked about the importance of maintaining a company portal, which can be accessed by company members anywhere in the world giving immediate access to everyday company resources such as CRM tools, calendar and contacts.
Citrix was established in 1989 and is an operating system licensee for server computing. The company provides add –on products for use with Microsoft’s Windows Server. Products released by Citrix include Metaframe XP, Nfuse Classic and Nfuse Elite. The Elite version of Nfuse allows for more advanced profiling.
