Data quality forms the core of business analytics projects

According to IDC, the vendors that prioritise data quality will emerge as market leaders in the business analytics market.

The demand for business analytics solutions is on the rise, as the market for business intelligence and data warehousing software matures. IDC is predicting that the vendors, which prioritise data quality, will emerge as market leaders.

“As a building block for robust business analytics solutions, data quality has long been a neglected area of this market. It takes considerable discipline and dedicated resources, both in short supply, to overcome ongoing challenges of poor quality data,” comments Dan Vesset, program manager for IDC’s Analytics & Data Warehousing Software program.

“However, not having a data quality initiative is increasingly not an option in an environment demanding productivity gains across all business processes,” he adds.

According to a 2003 survey conducted by DM Review in conjunction with IDC, budget constraint was the most frequently mentioned complaint for all organisations regarding business analytics implementation.

Smaller companies were facing challenges understanding and managing user expectations – a business challenge that has an especially strong impact in the business analytics market.

Business analytics implementations that are conducted under best practice project management techniques should encourage collaboration and communication between the business and IT communities if the project is to be a success.

Several survey findings suggest that some level of 'disconnect' exists between these two groups with regard to expectations for and understand of business analytics implementations.
