Unemployment in Saudi at 9%

Unemployment in Saudi Arabia is estimated to be 9% of the total workforce (expatriates and nationals), according to Ali Al-Namlah, minister of labor and social affairs, recently quoted in the Arabic daily Al Okaz.

The minister was quoted as saying Saudis between the ages of 16 and 25 make up 62% of the total population.

Unofficial estimates by analysts place the Kingdom’s unemployment rate at 20-30%.

Crown Prince Abdullah issued a directive, following a visit on Nov. 21 to poor neighbourhoods of Riyadh, the Saudi capital, to combat poverty. Saudi Arabia, which once reported one the highest per capita incomes in the world ($18,000 in 1981), suffers from growing unemployment and mounting government debt. The Crown Prince called on the well off in the Kingdom to make donations to ease the suffering of the poor.
