Nokia woos first time users with affordable handsets

Nokia is seeking to penetrate low mobile penetration markets like Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific by introducing an affordable and easy-to-use mobile phone for voice and text messaging that caters to first time users. The Nokia 2100 is expected to be released during the first quarter of 2003 in the Middle East.
"There is clearly good potential for the continued growth of mobile telephony in markets such as Russia, Middle East and Africa where mobile phone penetration rates are relatively low. In these markets the total population exceeds one billion and the penetration rate is below 5%. Nokia sees the potential demand and the opportunity to create handset growth in these markets by developing products which offer user simplicity, value for money, attractive design, quality and reliability to cater to the needs of first time users," said Matti Parkkinen, general manager, Mobile Entry Products Business Unit, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.
The Nokia 2100 supports up to 4 lines of display with a white backlight for enhanced readability. It offers a wide range of interchangeable Xpress-on covers. In the Middle East, the Nokia 2100 will come in yellow, green or grey in the standard sales package with colour cover options – blue, purple, dark purple, fuchsia, orange and yellow.
"The Nokia 2100 is the first in this range of products we are introducing to this consumer segment. We believe that its affordability, complemented by a relevant feature set will appeal to first time users encompassing both youth and adults in these markets where voice and basic messaging services are very much in demand," he added.
In addition to enhanced local language features, the Nokia 2100 comes with animated screensavers, built-in games, a picture editor which allows users to create and personalise picture messages, a newly designed photo window on the back cover and a stylised lanyard feature for enhanced personalisation. The phone weighs 84.5 g and has a talktime of up to 2 hrs – 3 hrs 20 mins and a standby time of up to 50 – 150 hrs using a standard lithium-ion battery.
