E-Security Roadshow Gets Chilling Statistics

The ITP E-Security roadshow got underway in Dubai, with speakers giving stark warnings about the levels of losses already incurred and the lack of awareness about the dangers of intrusion to corporate computer systems.

The ITP e-security roadshow got under way in Dubai with staggering revelations about the levels of losses which are being incurred in e-business and e-commerce through preventable causes, like hacking and other unauthorised use.

A packed room of delegates at the Emirates Towers’ Godolphin Ballroom heard speaker after speaker criticize corporate attitudes on security, despite the overwhelming body of evidence.

The core figures, according to the leading academic Dr Saeed al Dhaheri, is that losses in e-business and e-commerce amount to $15-billion per year. At the same time, more than half the world’s businesses spend less than five percent of their annual budget on security.

Dr Dhaheri revealed that the issue is so serious, and there is such a lack of qualified, skilled security professionals that the Zayed University has instituted a degree in e-security. He described it as “an essential degree in the development of the IT culture. Ten years ago there were few, if any, degrees in IT and e-commerce. Now there are many. The new e-security degree has applications in any and every business.”

Paul O’Kirwan, from Microsoft, says that if a company does business in cyberspace it has to make the assumption that it will be attacked. He says this realization prompted Microsoft to change its corporate outlook away from “plug and play” to security. It is now the company’s top priority in the development of new products.
