Big Blue dominates network services

IBM Global Services has retained its lead in the worldwide network consulting and integration services market with a whopping 17.7% of the $19.2 billion market.

IBM Global Services has retained its lead in the worldwide network consulting and integration services market. According to IDC, which ranks the companies on their 2001 revenues, Big Blue’s service arm still commands a whopping 17.7% of the $19.2 billion market.

EDS and Compaq (now HP) lag someway behind IBM with respective market shares of 7.9% and 7.3%. Alcatel and Getronics fill out the rest of the top five with markets shares of 6.3% and 5.6% respectively.

The analyst house says that each vendor can expect significant revenue growth in the near future as the global economy comes out of its recent slump.

“Despite the fact that many network consulting companies — particularly those focused on the service provider market — experienced a prolonged slowdown in demand, several types of specialised services should see robust growth during 2002 and 2003,” says Christine Tenneson, senior analyst for IDC’s Network Support and Integration Services research.

However, to take advantage of this growth, Tenneson warns that the vendors need to expand into other areas away from pure network consulting and integration.

“To take advantage of the fastest-growing areas, network services firms should investigate developing or expanding their capabilities in security consulting and implementation, wireless consulting and implementation, operations assessments, network optimisation services, and convergence services,” she comments.
