Broadband costs cut with 3Com gateway
3Com has announced the launch of its Office Connect Cable/DSL Secure Gateway.
3Com has announced the launch of its Office Connect Cable/DSL Secure Gateway. It continues the company’s drive to expand it product range for small and medium sized businesses (SMB).
The gateway allows SMBs to share DSL and cable lines so reducing the cost of broadband access. It also contains security features and the ability to initiate and terminate connection to virtual private networks (VPN).
“The task of selecting and implementing security products can often be overwhelming to small business owners, even though it is essential for protecting their business,” Kathy Rocha, vice president for the Small Business Division in 3Com’s Business Networks Company.
“3Com has integrated a full-featured firewall, including VPN access, into a business-class gateway making it easier for small businesses to affordably secure their networks while staying connected to suppliers and customers,” she added.
The product includes an industry-standard, packet inspection firewall, which tracks transactions to ensure that inbound packets were actually requested by the user. Data encryption is handled using standard protocol conventions allowing using users to send or receive VPN packets. The gateway also provides basic security capabilities typically found in other gateway products including network address translation, traffic filtering, and hacker pattern detection.
It connects to an existing cable or DSL modem via an Ethernet cable, and contains an integrated switch with four Ethernet/Fast Ethernet local area network (LAN) ports. Users can connect directly through these ports, or any port can be used to connect to the existing office Ethernet LAN. When extended by a LAN, over 250 users are able to leverage the OfficeConnect Cable/DSL Secure Gateway to access a single broadband Internet connection.
