Booming year for business WLAN market

The business wireless local area network (WLAN) market bucked the downward trend of the networking industry to record 175% growth for WLAN hardware shipments in 2001, according to In-Stat/MDR.

The business wireless local area network (WLAN) market bucked the downward trend of the networking industry to record 175% growth for WLAN hardware shipments in 2001, according to In-Stat/MDR. The revenues for 2001 were equally impressive increasing 92% over the previous year.

Although the research group is expecting growth to continue in the WLAN market, the predictions for 2002 are slightly more conservative as a result of falling prices for 802.11b equipment and reduced prices for 802.11a products. As such, the In-Stat/MDR anticipates that shipments will increase by 60%, while revenues will only grow by 7%.

“To appeal to businesses, WLAN systems must be secure, manageable, scalable and cost-effective,” says Gemma Paulo, analyst, In-Stat/MDR.

“Although the main buzzword among corporate WLAN installations is ‘security,’ there are a number of other considerations that a business takes into account,” she adds.

Small businesses, remote offices and small departments of medium-to-large businesses are also beginning to deploy WLAN solutions, although the bulk of WLAN products purchased remained largely in the vertical market.
