Extreme Networks is touting the flexibility and scalability of its BlackDiamond 6804 core Ethernet switch. The 6804 switch offers a more compact solution than its BlackDiamond 6808 and 6816 family members.

According to the vendor, the compact switch is ideally suited to wiring closets, points of presence (PoPs) and rack environments. The switch is also capable of scaling from Fast Ethernet to 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and offers a host of features including: MPLS functionality, advanced Quality of Service (QoS) and wide area network connectivity with packet over SONET (PoS) and ATM network interfaces.

“With the BlackDiamond 6804 switch, Extreme Networks provides a high performance and scalable switch to complement our leading BlackDiamond switching platform,” says Ray Milhem, senior director of product management for Extreme Networks.

“Customers are better served with a wide breadth of products that share the same high-performance ASICs, run state-of-the-art management software and support hardware interfaces providing connectivity over Ethernet, SONET and ATM,” he adds.

The 6804 switch is also capable of supporting Extreme Networks’ 10 GLRi 10 Gigabit Ethernet module and offers multi-layer switch and routing capabilities, such as IP Multicast, server load balancing and web cache redirect.
