Oracle extends Linux support in bid to capture emerging market

Oracle announces Linux support for a range of products including Release 2 of Oracle9i Database, Application Server and the Oracle9i Developer Suite.

Oracle’s local operation is attempting to capture a share of the emerging Linux RDBMS market. The software vendor has announced Linux support for a range of products including Release 2 of Oracle9i Database, Application Server and the Oracle9i Developer Suite.

“Demand for Linux in the Middle East has increased considerably over the last few years, as enterprises in the region have experimented with Linux and experienced its business benefits firsthand, including reduced infrastructure costs and greater productivity,” says Ayman Abouseif, senior marketing director, Oracle Eastern, Central Europe and Middle East, Africa.

“The increasing popularity of Linux in the region, coupled with the market dominance of Oracle’s database, application server, and development tools, make Oracle and Linux an important new offering for the Middle East’s business,” he adds.

Support from heavyweight software vendors, such as Oracle and IBM, is critical if the open source OS is to become established at the heart of the enterprise.

Analyst group, IDC is confident that Linux’s enterprise potential.

“IDC expects Linux to become a key platform for enterprise databases in the coming years. As such, it is a promising environment for Oracle to focus on,” says Carl Olofson, program director for IDC.

“IDC projects that, given the right development and support for Linux, the market revenue for relational DBMS on Linux will surpass the relational DBMS revenues on Unix by 2006, growing to US$5.9 billion,” predicts Olofson.
