Mirapoint: MMS cutting-edge, not complicated

While Gartner expects messaging revenues to almost double to $22.3 billion by 2006, over a third of the world's MMS trials have selected Mirapoint’s standards-based server.

Long since established in the global messaging market, California-based Mirapoint has launched a multimedia messaging service (MMS) platform. Based on its current Message Server architecture, the new platform will pitch at emerging MMS trials throughout the world.

Already, Mirapoint messaging platforms have been deployed in over a third of all worldwide MMS operator trials. Through Mirapoint’s partnership with CMG Wireless Data Solutions, leading operators like Hutchison 3G, throughout Europe and Asia, and Optimus in Portugal, are building future MMS services on the Mirapoint platform.

"Today, messaging is the universal common denominator driving business and consumer communications over the telephone, wireless and data networks," said Satish Ramachandran, CEO of Mirapoint.

"We see multimedia messaging as the next-generation killer app that's bringing them all together,” adds Ramachandran. “Mirapoint's solution not only accomplishes this integration today, but functions as a powerful platform for billable services in the future."

The Mirapoint platform offers a centralised storage and access hub for messaging services. This enables wireless carriers rapidly to integrate multimedia messaging with traditional desktop e-mail, SMS, WAP, i-mode, Web and other revenue-producing services.

"Mirapoint believes that although MMS is cutting-edge technology, it shouldn't have to be complicated to deploy," continued Ramachandran.

"Operators should not have to change totally their networks or purchase additional costly technologies to offer advanced services.

"There is clearly an economic penalty to be paid by service providers if they have to buy separate infrastructures for separate messaging-based services. Consumers also demand the ability to obtain messages in any format, from any source, on a single device."

According to analysts, MMS represents a significant revenue opportunity for international carriers. Gartner Dataquest expects worldwide revenues from all forms of mobile messaging to almost double to $22.3 billion by 2006 from $13.4 billion
last year.

According to the Yankee Group, high adoption rates and premium prices will create a $10 billion multimedia messaging market by 2006, when messaging will generate $44 billion in annual service revenues.

"Multimedia messaging is a revolution in mobile communications, akin to the transition to Windows in the PC world," concludes Simon Buckingham, CEO of analyst company Mobile Streams.
