Kuwait University plans extensive Cisco network

KU goes with Cisco network to support its increasing use of e-learning, IP telephony, IP television (IP/TV) and videoconferencing.

Kuwait University is planning to deploy a Cisco-based converged voice and data network that will support the university’s increasing use of e-learning, IP telephony, IP television (IP/TV) and videoconferencing. The network will connect five campuses within Kuwait City including the new buildings on the Shuwaikh campus.

A variety of Cisco Catalyst switches, including the Catalyst 6500, the Catalyst 4006 and the Catalyst 3500 will be deployed to ensure the highest level of support for multicasting, which is critical for running applications like IP/TV.

Also the university is planning to deploy Cisco’s Aironet 1200 local wireless area network (WLAN) within certain social areas, to enable students to connect to the Internet and register for courses.

“Cisco's solution was the natural choice for our new network,” says Anwar Al-Ayoub, assistant director for communications.

“Cisco has established a strong position in Kuwait and is able to offer the highest level of service guarantees. Its support network coupled with its respected position as a partner for Middle East education establishments, were two of the key reasons behind our decision to deploy a Cisco network infrastructure,” he adds.

With the increasing number of multimedia applications finding their way into academic networks, Kuwait University has focused its investment strategy to create an infrastructure to support applications in an efficient and non-disruptive manner. The Cisco network is based on the vendor’s leading AVVID solution (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data).
