Linux vendors to announce single distribution

Tired of Red Hat's monopoly in the Linux market, some vendors have teamed up and vowed to launch a single Linux distribution.

Some Linux vendors such as Caldera, Conectiva, SuSE and Turbolinux are scheduled to announce later this week that they have agreed to standardise on a single Linux distribution. The move has been made in an effort to break Red Hat’s dominance in the Linux market.

Each of the vendors involved in the announcement play significant roles in specific regions —Conectiva in Brazil and other parts of South America; SuSE in Gemany and Western Europe; and Turbolinux in the Pacific Rim countries and other parts of Asia Pacific.

While is is still unclear as to how the consolidation will be effected, the possibility of having a standard Linux will appeal to more enterprises, who have, so far, complained about the complexities of getting support for each version. Whether this will trim Red Hat’s profits is still to be seen.
