Symbol unveils wireless protection
Symbol Technologies has released a suite of wireless security software to the region in a bid to secure networking protection contracts.
Symbol says MobiusGuard is aimed at wireless LANs, mobile devices and applications. The company claims the products make networking protection more cost-effective without compromising security or performance.
Symbol expects to sell the technology to corporate customers that want to offer public users wireless Internet access over the same wireless network used by their own employees. Corporate lobby areas, waiting rooms in hospitals, al fresco areas at universities and guest rooms in hotels are also prospective sites, says Symbol.
Sunil Chadha, regional manager at Symbol Technologies Middle East, observes that wireless networking has shown a dramatic increase in uptake in the Middle East in the last six months.
“But many customers have concerns about security. We believe that we have assembled the best security methods available today in a straightforward and comprehensive suite, so that we can help our customers here make an intelligent security adoption decision.”
MobiusGuard depends on Symbol’s AirBEAM Safe, a wireless virtual private network (WVPN) security software that runs on Symbol’s wireless mobile computing devices operating on Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC software.
MobiusGuard integrates with Symbol Spectrum24 High Rate 4131 Access Point which can also detect unauthorized and rogue access points and alert network administrators.
It boasts Kerberos, EAP/TLS (Extensible Authentication Protocol/Transport Layer Security) and RADIUS (Remote Access Dial-In User Service) authentication tools and KeyGuard, a proprietary enhanced Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP) based on the forthcoming IEEE 802.11i standard.
