It’s here: Nokia’s new Communicator

Nokia’s 9210i Communicator has arrived in the Middle East, pitched at business users with advanced mobile Internet, security features and real-time video streaming.

Devout Nokia followers can breathe a sigh of relief today: the new Nokia 9210i Communicator has finally arrived. Boasting enlarged internal memory capacity, the latest incarnation of this popular handset offers several advances over its predecessor.

The 9210i is the first Nokia device to feature a web browser supporting JavaScripts, a Flash Player for the playback of Macromedia flash animations, and a RealOne Player enabling real-time video and audio streaming in HSCSD networks.

Data processing speed is also enhanced with a total memory capacity of 40 MB, which can be expanded further with additional memory cards.

Another Nokia first for corporate users is the enhanced security of Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability. The Nokia IPSec VPN client allows mobile users to establish a secure connection to their respective corporate Intranets.

Once a mobile user is fully authenticated to the corporate VPN, all data transferred to and from the communicator is then encrypted. The Nokia VPN Client will be available as additional software for pilot VPN deployments during Q2 2002.

“The importance of mobile business is growing rapidly across the Middle East and it is becoming increasingly important for executives to increase their productivity whilst in transit or away from their headquarters,” said Eddie Maalouf, marketing manager, Nokia Middle East.

“The Nokia 9210i’s new features not only help to keep mobile professionals in touch with their colleagues and customers, but with the added security applications they can access, create or review important information without needing a fixed Internet connection,” added Maalouf.

The new features of the www-browser, such as HTML 4.01 compatibility, JavaScript support, and Cascade Style Sheet, increase the feasibility of Internet surfing.

The Flash Player, supporting Macromedia Flash 5, a widely used motion delivery method in the PC environment, further enriches the experience by letting users enjoy movies, cartoons and games on their mobile terminals.

Expect the 9210i to retail in the region of US$650. Prices will vary according to local distributors.
