Dubai Police pulls up two resellers for piracy

In a raid conducted by the Dubai police against two computer shops, three people were detained and several pirated CDs confiscated.

In a raid conducted by the Dubai police against two computer shops, three people were detained and several pirated CDs confiscated. The resellers had loaded new computers with unlicensed software. Several counterfeit CDs containing popular software products including Adobe Photoshop were also discovered at the premises.

“The amount of investigation that was required in this operation shows the extent to which the trade in illegal software has gone underground in the UAE, thus proving the success that the government has achieved in curbing these activities,” commented Scott Butler, CEO, Arabian Anti-piracy Alliance (AAA). “This operation reflects the unwavering effort by the Dubai Police and their dedication to the protection of intellectual property rights in the country. They have a clear agenda to drive and promote the growth of a strong and dynamic technology market in the country.”

The UAE authorities have been working closely with anti-piracy organizations such as the AAA and BSA to create greater awareness among resellers about the consequences of trading in illegal software. “The message is straightforward and consistent from the start: copying or using copied software in the UAE is a direct breach of the law, and it has serious consequences. These resellers have learned it at their own detriment, and we can only hope that others will benefit from this example and cease their illicit activities immediately” concluded Butler.
