Intel channel ships 100 millionth processor

Intel has shipped its 100 millionth processor, a Pentium 4, through its worldwide channel operations.

Intel has shipped its one hundredth million boxed processor through its reseller channel. The company began selling boxed processors through the channel in late 1994, in an effort to provide a more attractive products to white box builders. Since then the company’s channel has grown to 60,000 companies in 75 countries worldwide.

“This is an important milestone for our channel business because it shows how far we have come in making Intel products broadly available for system builders and resellers around the world,” said Gilbert Lacroix, general manager of Intel MEA. “The programme of boxed microprocessors distribution extends right down into the souks of the Arab world, and currently, with the analysts estimating the current GCC PC market for 2002 at 1.4 million units, this means lively business for our products.”

“We cannot underestimate the importance of this sales channel in our region, as it allows the small to medium volume locally based players the chance to build a local business on local contacts and an ability to come up with local solutions. Even during the recent economic downturn this sales channel, has shown its resilience, and continues to rapidly adopt new technology with a highly flexible business model,” added Lacroiox.

Boxed microprocessors are intended to provide systems integrators with more technical data on the product, branding materials for finished products and warranty information. Last year, despite a declining PC market, Intel still reported record sales of Intel processors, including improving uptake of the Pentium 4—the milestone chip was Pentium 4.
