Radical overhaul for UAE Internet
Etisalat has announced sweeping changes to the way in which domain names are registered in the UAE, coupled with price reductions and new domain name categories.
Etisalat has announced sweeping changes to the ‘.ae’ domain name in an effort to enhance and structure the UAE’s online presence.
The new rules and regulations governing domain name registration are designed to provide a high quality legal framework, drastically reducing the problem of people registering domain names in bad faith, infringing on copyrights.
In addition, the United Arab Emirates Network Information Centre (UAEnic), the Etisalat department in charge of the ‘.ae’ domain name, announced price reductions of up to 60%, as well as new domain name categories for professionals and individuals.
The new procedures have been endorsed by the World Intellectual Property Organisation, making UAEnic the first Top Level Domain administrator in the Middle East to receive such an accolade.
“The new rules, terms and conditions are key to laying the foundations as the UAE increases its presence online,” said Abdulla Hashim, manager, UAEnic. “It describes the subjects of the domain name and includes registration practices, procedures, intellectual property rights, the registration agreement and the availability of contact details.”
The number of categories for domain names has been increased from seven to nine with the introduction of ‘pro.ae’ for professionals such as lawyers and doctors, and ‘name.ae’ for individuals.
