Cisco Systems is starting to see its market leadership in network switching eroded by rival vendors, primarily Extreme Networks and Foundry Networks, according to a report by Giga Information Group.

Although, Cisco remains on many enterprises’ short list for network switches, competitors, such as Extreme are gaining increasing recognition among enterprises and beginning to edge Cisco out of deals.

“Cisco receives an almost automatic slot on the short list because of its market dominance, its viability, and the fact that it offers so many network services that appeal to large companies,” says Stan Schatt, analyst, communications & networks, Giga Information Group.

“Extreme has been battling Foundry and Enterasys for a short-list slot and recently has emerged as a consistent selection,” he adds.

Performances, improved quality of service and management packages, as well as increasingly homogeneous network environments are some of the reasons for Extreme’s market gain, says Giga Group.

“Its [Extreme] pricing has proven to be very difficult for Cisco,” comments Schatt. “Extreme is [also] competing actively against Cisco by offering very competitive metro area Gigabit products for enterprise clients that want to extend their local area networks (LANs).”

However, Cisco’s reseller community still provides the vendor with one significant advantage over its competitors. Giga Information Group advises customers to ensure that local Extreme resellers have the experience relevant to their network requirements.
