HP launches multi-functional printer range

Hewlett Packard intends to drive the growth of the printer market to higher levels with the development of what it calls multi-functional printers (mfp).

Hewlett Packard intends to drive its printer business into new areas with the development of what it calls multi-functional printers (mfp). These units combine the functionality of printers, copiers, fax machines and scanners as well as having the ability to digitally send a wide variety of documents.

With three models covering the single user up to large office, HP thinks it will be in prime position to capitalise on the growth of documents production it expects over the next four years. It bases that expectation on analysis from Gartner Dataquest that suggests although the number of documents being printed, as a proportion of the total, is declining, the overall growth rate of documents is overtaking that trend leading to an upwards curve in the printing requirements of businesses.

“Any Web-enabled appliance, from desktop PCs to mobile phones, represents a potential source and destination for business information. To reap the advantages of these devices, HP customers need seamless integration of digital and paper-based information. With our new multi-function products, solutions and services, customers now have a diversified and scalable portfolio of personal and shared HP multi-function printers,” said Reinhardt Winkler, general manager, HP Imaging and Printing.

Rolf Gerstner, business and marketing strategy for commercial imaging printing services, EMEA, explained HP’s strategy as one of e-enabling the whole document management system. “We want to provide end to end solutions that are focused portability and functionality,” he said.

He also added that the recent up take of CRM systems has contributed to the market for such systems as a lot of information tends to be bundled together to target customers more precisely, which requires different forms of information like digital images, documents and contact details to be used and stored together.

The models in question start with the LaserJet 3300mfp, which has 1200dpi resolution; 14 ppm and 33 kbps fax speed. The 4100 offers 24 ppm and has a 250MHz processor and a 16MB memory. The top of the range 9000 series can print 50 pages per minute and 300,000 per month and has 64MB of memory as standard as well as a 300MHz processor.
