IBM has unveiled a whole range of new models, in its new XTRA line of ThinkPad notebook PCs, in the Middle East. Each of these models comes with unique features designed to address the needs of specific types of customers. The X series, for instance, caters to the extreme mobile who need light-weight options, the T series is for executives who require robust laptops, the R series addresses users with basic computing needs and the A series comes with the mobile Pentium 4.

“These new models have features and technology advantages that make them an ideal solution for businesses and consumers in the Middle East. The XTRA range of IBM notebook PCs is a uniquely structured set of products, simply and logically divided to meet the needs of all our customers, from power users to budget customers, “said Sameh Faird, regional manager, personal systems group, Middle East, Egypt and Pakistan (MEEP).

“The Middle East market represents a huge opportunity for our mobile computing offerings. According to IDC figures, we had a 12.5 % market share in the MEEP region last year, and it is growing steadily.”

Some impressive features in this range include DDR (double data rate) memory and IBM’s Embedded Security System (ESS) which combines both hardware and software for a total security solution. The ESS enhances authentication solutions, encrypts files on the hard disk drive and eliminates the need for the key-fob used by many virtual private networks.

The new models include a communications bay for flexible wireless and wired networking as well “point and click” applications called Access Connections that gives users real-time information on network connection status. Other unique features that distinguish the new ThinkPad series from competing products include a dual antenna design incorporated on both sides of the notebook to provide increased signal strength and optimal reception/transmission, a lid around the monitor with double clasps to keep additional documents without damaging the screen and a ThinkLight keyboard light which enables users to work in low-light conditions such as planes.
