Telecom Egypt signs up Ericsson

Swedish telecoms equipment manufacturer Ericsson is to help Telecom Egypt upgrade its network to cope with both changing technology and growing demand.

Telecom Egypt has enlisted Swedish equipment manufacturer Ericsson to help modernise its telecoms infrastructure.

The agreement is the basis for a strategic partnership over the next five years, valued at Eur 200 million.

Ericsson will aid Telecom Egypt in upgrading the National Telecommunication Infrastructure to cope with growing demand, as well as to accelerate the migration of the core backbone network from a circuit-switched to an open layered packet-based network.

"Ericsson has proven to be a trusted partner and we believe with their leadership in the field of Communication and Information technology they will be a suitable partner supporting us achieving our objectives when facing the highly competitive market place," said Eng. Akil Beshir, chairman of Telecom Egypt.

"Egypt has proven to be one of the fast growing markets in the important and prosperous region of Middle East and Africa," said Mats Granryd, president of Ericsson Egypt. "Ericsson is proud to be selected as strategic partner to Telecom Egypt and actively contribute to the development of the Communication and Information services in Egypt."

The deal will see Ericsson supply its ENGINE technology, which allows the migration of traditional circuit-switched networks into a single next generation network.

"The close partnership established will ensure that the objectives for the development within Communication and Information will be met and in alignment with the MCIT Telecom Master Plan," said Dr Tarek Kamel, advisor, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.
