VIA Technologies has released its Mini ITX motherboard and its Eden embedded platform at CeBIT. The company is hoping to drive the development of a new sector of form factors based on the compact technology.

Both components can be used in products without cooling fans because of their low power requirements result in cool running characteristics. VIA products based on the technology include set top boxes, a tablet PC and a Web Pad reference system.

"With our ultra low power VIA Eden platform and the highly compact Mini-ITX motherboard form factor, VIA is spearheading the development of an exciting new breed of fanless, quiet running small footprint 'total connectivity' devices," said Richard Brown, director of marketing for VIA.

"The large number of innovative solutions we have on display at CeBIT clearly demonstrates the growing momentum of this high potential segment of the market. It is good for a third PC in the home or an MP3 server, and with wireless networking becoming more popular there is a real call for these designs. Designers can be a lot more creative when it comes to configuration,” added Brown.

VIA says that with power consumption levels of six watts the Eden platform is the lowest power consumption x86 embedded platform available that will give low energy costs and long battery life for mobile devices. The Mini ITX measures 170mm x 170mm and has built in graphics, networking and communications functions and a PCI slot for expansion purposes. Both will be available from Aptec in the Middle East.
