Ipix immerses in 3D imagery

Ipix has developed a new software technology that transforms digital photographs into virtual 3D, 'spherical' images.

Ipix (Internet Pictures Corporation) has developed a new software technology that transforms digital photographs into virtual 3D images.

Launched today on www.ipixme.com, ‘immersive imaging’ combines two 180-degree photographs, each taken with a fish-eye lens, into a 360-degree spherical image.

Once inserted into a web page, the viewer can move throughout the image in any direction, both vertically and horizontally. The underlying image can also change, in effect creating short movies with completely customisable camera angles.

Ipix believes the technology has considerable commercial potential for e-commerce. It will add a new dimension to online entertainment and could be used to create virtual tours of, for instance, department stores and real-estate.

Security cameras could also be fitted with Ipix software, transforming them into ‘all-seeing’ 360-degree eyes.

The technology will continue to be developed in Dubai. Wadi Ahmed, marketing director of Emirates Venture Group, said, "Ipix has plans to develop Dubai as a major research and development centre for this technology. I believe one day in the not-so-distant future, Dubai may become the global post-production centre for Ipix movies."
