The formation of the Serial ATA II working group has been announced at the Spring 2002 Intel Developer Forum, currently taking place in San Francisco.

Serial ATA 1.0 technology was released in August 2001, and was met with wide industry support. It is a replacement of the parallel ATA physical storage interface that serves the desktop, server and network storage market segments. Serial ATA will be utilised to connect to motherboards internal storage devices such as DVD, CD-R/Ws and hard disks.

Jason Ziller, chairman of the Serial Working Group and technology initiatives manager for Intel, explained: "the Serial ATA specification builds on the momentum of Serial ATA 1.0, which is expected to have first products in the marketplace by the second quarter of this year."

The formation of the ATA II working group is intended to pave the way for development of the Serial ATA II specification, which will enhance existing ATA specification for server and networked storage markets, in addition to providing second generation signaling speed.

Members of the working group include Dell, Intel, Maxtor, Adaptec, NEC, IBM and a hostof other industry leaders. At the announcement of the group's formation, it was explained that the Serial ATA II sepcification is to be completed in a two stage project.

Storage features are expected to be finalised in the latter half of 2002, with product deployment to follow in 2003. The second phase involves enhanced signaling rate, and is predicted to be defined and deployed in the second half of 2003 and 2004, respectively.
