Internet uptake doubles in Arab countries in 2001

The number of Internet subscribers within the Arab countries totalled 1.1 million in 2001 an increase of 50% from the previous year, according to the Arab Advisors Group.

The number of Internet subscribers within the Arab countries totalled 1.1 million in 2001 an increase of 50% from the previous year, according to the Arab Advisors Group. Figures from the research group reveal that 368,280 additional users took to the Web last year.

The eight Arab countries also used a combined International Internet bandwidth total of 1.9 Gbps in 2001. The research group also revealed that the amount of available International Internet bandwidth increased by 155% in 2001, adding 1.205 Gbps of available bandwidth to the Arab region.

"This increase in total bandwidth to total subscribers is a change for the better, especially in the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Egypt where the percent growth in bandwidth was at least more than double the growth rate of subscribers", said Shahin Shahin, analyst, Arab Advisors Group.

The figures also revealed that in terms of bandwidth availability per account, Oman led the way, followed by Morocco, Egypt and the UAE. However, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt and Lebanon had all lost ground from the previous Internet bandwidth rankings conducted in August 2001 by the Arab Advisors Group.
