Dubai Reseller caught red-handed

The UAE Ministry of Information raids a Computer Street reseller, catching staff in the process of selling two PCs loaded with unlicensed software.

The Ministry of Information has carried out a raid on a Dubai reseller, uncovering more software piracy. Staff in the shop were caught selling two PCs that contained several pirated applications. The reseller now faces criminal prosecution for breaking the UAE’s copyright law.

The applications that were found on the PCs was not disclosed, although they were described as ‘high-end’.

“Such raids illustrate the high risk involved in using unlicensed software, perpetrators face harsh penalties, as dictated by the copyright law,” said Ahmad Al-Jassem, Autodesk’s Regional Director. “Not only is this law meant to nurture and support the UAE’s IT industry, but it also helps to develop the other market sectors that support it.”
Autodesk is a member of the BSA. The company’s construction applications have been pirated on a large scale in the region, although this problem has receded in the past few years, especially in the UAE.

The BSA has worked closely with the UAE Ministry of Information for several years to assist in building an environment conducive to the growth and success of the information technology sector. For such an environment to materialize, the protection of intellectual property, including software and Internet content is key.

“This is yet another impressive achievement by the Ministry of Information. We congratulate them on their unwavering commitment in protecting intellectual property rights in this country. The result has been, that the UAE has emerged as a role model in combating illegal software and maintaining the lowest piracy levels in the region,” added Al Jassim.
