Port Zayed Authority increases efficiency with IT infrastructure overhaul
Emirates Computers worked with the port authority to deliver the hardware, software and expertise to deploy the solution.
Port Zayed Authority has upgraded its entire IT infrastructure, automating many of its business processes, reducing the volume of paperwork and increasing its efficiency.
The project was undertaken in accordance with the directives of H.H. Sheikh Saeed Bin Zayed Al Nahayan, president of the Seaport Authorities in Abu Dhabi.
Emirates Computers worked with the port authority to deliver the hardware, software, networking kit and expertise to deploy the solution.
The solution will provide shipping agents with the option of instantly following up on their shipments over the Internet or through an electronic data interchange system (EDI). The project also included the installation of a fully integrated system to ensure the automation of all operational and administrative operations at the port and accelerate transactions without recourse to or paper work.
According Mubarak Mohammed Abu-Alainain, the under-secretary of operational affairs and chairman of the technical committee, the project has created a unified system for containers, purchasing, security and safety at the Abu Dhabi seaports.
The solution also uses ‘Navis Sparcs’ software, which is used in more than 140 naval stations across the world and embraced by terminal operators to drastically reduce ship-loading time. By using the Sparcs software the seaport will reduce loading time by as much as eight hours.
“Emirates Computers is delighted to have been given the opportunity to provide advanced technological solutions to Port Zayed. This project is of great significance to us as it is one of the largest and the first integrated system of its kind approved by a seaport in the Middle East,” said Hani Harik, president Emirates Computers.
“The project also included undertaking comprehensive training for more than 200 personnel in the various aspects of application, maintenance and database administration. Furthermore, it included dispensing the technical know-how on usage of new systems, reducing paperwork transactions and the installation of a facility to follow up on all operational procedures via computer monitors,” explained Harik.
The first stage of the project comprised supplying the equipment and the main applications for the port including installation of 14 Xeon-based Dell servers with the condition that the second stage would complement all the naval systems.
The second stage also achieved clerical automation with a system for controlling and monitoring equipment, a camera monitoring procedure at entrances and an internationally used system to designate vessel locations and their paths of sailing. It also included direct communication with all port buildings and other ports in Abu Dhabi such as Al Mussaffah, Al Saddir and Al Marfaa.
