CMG invests in African SMS networks

CMG Wireless Data Solutions, a supplier of mobile messaging solutions, today announced the launch of its Smart SMS system in South Africa.

CMG Wireless Data Solutions, a supplier of mobile messaging solutions, today announced the launch of its Smart SMS system in South Africa.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) forecasts in its African Telecommunication Indicators 2001 report (released next month) an explosive growth that will create three times as many mobile users than fixed-line users in Africa by 2002. According to the report, the number of mobile networks in Africa is expected to balloon to 98 million.

Peter Maathuis, vice president of CMG’s communications arm, told ITP.net that the company is now investing heavily in South African SMS systems in anticipation of this market growth. “Our high-performance systems,” he explained, “will be able to generate anything between 20 and 30 per cent of network provider’s revenues in the near future. It is through services like SMS that mobile operators make most of their profits.”

The growth in mobile telecommunications in Africa in the next few years is expected to be so phenomenal partly because of the limited degree of landline infrastructure in place. It is far easier to install mobile networks than fixed cable systems.

Mobile telephony has already attracted more consumers than fixed-line users in no less than 17 African countries, including in some of the continent’s strongest economies like South Africa, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Botswana and Tanzania.

Mike Chalmers, head of CMG’s African arm comments: “A new breed of pan-African companies is creating the mobile miracle in Africa. The ITU anticipates 98 million mobile users in Africa and only a small increase in messaging behaviour of subscribers could lead to an explosion in SMS traffic volumes.

“By launching the Smart SMS system, we now provide a complete SMS strategy catering to all operators in Africa and worldwide, from start-ups to high-flyers, offering reliability, availability and low cost of ownership at every stage of their SMS growth.”
