Opportunities for network product support providers remain strong

Despite disappointing shipments in some network technologies areas, the economic slowdown may actually create opportunities for network product support providers, says IDC.

As projects are put on hold, and spending curtailed, enterprises have an immediate need to protect their infrastructure investments through regular maintenance activities. According to the analyst house this is spurring a shift in focus to enhancing and maintaining the existing network, thus providing a revenue opportunity for vendors offering a range of onsite, remote, and other technical support services.

IDC also predicts that certain emerging network technologies - specifically converged private branch exchanges (CBX), softswitch and gateway products, IP VPN products, and optical devices - will provide attractive support opportunities during the next several years.

"Because of significant technology advancements, all vendors that are providing support services in this market must face changing customer requirements in a global support services context," says Christine Tenneson, senior analyst with IDC's network support and integration services research.

"The support service providers that will have the most success in the network product support marketplace in 2001 and beyond will be those companies that listen to the evolving needs of their global customer base and whose product support strategies continue to adapt to meet the ever-changing requirements of global networking infrastructures, business models, and organisations," she adds.
