Researchers at National Semiconductor in the United States have unveiled a concept mobile phone device that combines eight gadgets in one.

Called the Geode Origami Mobile Communicator, it is about the same weight and size as a small digital camcorder that folds and unfolds to perform eight popular consumer electronic functions — those of a mobile phone, MP3 player, PDA (personal digital assistant), camera, camcorder, and email, Internet and video-conferencing terminal.

It was unwrapped at Comdex in Las Vegas alongside nearly two-dozen other concept devices by National Semiconductor. It is not intended for production, but to stimulate ideas for future mobile devices.

“The Origami Mobile Communicator is an exciting conceptual device that showcases the broad range and depth of National’s analogue, digital and mixed-signal technologies,” said Brian Halla, CEO, National Semiconductor.

“From audio and video to displays and wireless, we have all the key technologies that are enabling tomorrow’s digital lifestyle.”
