A new robot-sniffer dog is being developed
A robot-sniffer dog, called NOSE (Neuromimetic Olfactory Sensing) is being built which can detect drugs, explosives and gas leaks.
A robot-sniffer dog called NOSE (Neuromimetic Olfactory Sensing), which can detect drugs, explosives and gas leaks, is being developed. It will be able to be sent, by remote control, into areas deemed too dangerous for real dogs.
Designers of NOSE have copied the complex system of nerves found in animals, in effect replicating the functions of a biological nose.
The robot was developed at Sheffield Hallam University in the UK under the guidance of Professor Barrie Jervis from the university’s School of Engineering. The project is on-going — post-doctoral research assistants are currently being recruited.
The project is being funded by the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automatic Control (INRIA).
The next stage of the work “is about the use of olfactory perception in an autonomous robot so as to mimic the animal behaviour of tracking specific odours. Possible future applications could include the detection and localisation of drugs, explosives, gas leaks in hostile environments (e.g. landmine) or in public places (e.g. airport)” (from Sheffield Hallam website).
