HP streamlines printer supply chain for local market

HP’s local office has set up a regional distribution centre in Jebel Ali Free Zone, which will manage a monthly stock turnaround of approximately $5 million per month.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) is accelerating the supply chain of its printer business in the region.

HP’s local office has set up a regional distribution centre in Jebel Ali Free Zone, which will manage a monthly stock turnaround of approximately $5 million per month.

“We’re increasing product availability and shipping products to the region faster,” says Dr. Ali Ferling, general manager of HP Middle East.

“Products will be shipped to Dubai and from here it is 24 hours by truck to anywhere in the region with the exception of Egypt,” he adds.

Although the supply chain solution has been set up along HP-specified lines, the day-to-day management will be handled by logistics player Expeditors.

Expeditors is responsible for everything from making sure that the stock is put on the boat in Germany and shipped to the region, the management of the warehousing floor space and the local delivery of products.

Initially at least, the supply chain solution will focus on high volume products with sustainable shelf life. Consequently, the current system will deliver printers and then in all likelihood progress to other high volume peripherals, such as monitors within the next six months.

However, due to the 28-day shipment time from Germany, the supply chain won’t be used for PCs, which will continue to be flown into the region.

“The key thing about this agreement is that it gives the business partners a degree of predictability that they didn’t have in their supply chain before,” explains Dr. Ferling.
